Fusarium Crown Rot



Scientific Name

Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. radicis-lycopersici

Overall Plant Symptoms

General stunting. Individual plants scattered among healthy plants.

Leaf Symptoms

Yellowing along oldest leaf margins followed by petiole collapse.

Stem Symptoms

Internal brown discoloration is present up to 10 inches above the root crown. Canker presence on root crown is the key identifying trait.

Root and Fruit Symptoms

Root: dry brown rot of the cortex and xylem. Easily seen near the soil surface.

Disease Source

Common in greenhouses, often airborne. Infested soils.

Source Peristence

Indefinitely. Solanaceous crops and legumes such as bean and pea are hosts.

Favoring Conditions

Cooler soil temperatures.

Critical Crop Time

Usually at or after fruit set as plant stress increases.

Controls/Management

Later plantings for warmer conditions, fumigation.

Additional Notes

Root lesion similar to F. Solani.
