General stunting. Individual plants scattered among healthy plants. |
Leaf Symptoms |
Yellowing along oldest leaf margins followed by petiole collapse. |
Stem Symptoms |
Internal brown discoloration is present up to 10 inches above the root crown. Canker presence on root crown is the key identifying trait. |
Root and Fruit Symptoms |
Root: dry brown rot of the cortex and xylem. Easily seen near the soil surface. |
Disease Source |
Common in greenhouses, often airborne. Infested soils. |
Source Peristence |
Indefinitely. Solanaceous crops and legumes such as bean and pea are hosts. |
Favoring Conditions |
Cooler soil temperatures. |
Critical Crop Time |
Usually at or after fruit set as plant stress increases. |
Controls/Management |
Later plantings for warmer conditions, fumigation. |
