Verticillium Wilt

Scientific Name

Verticillium Wilt
Races 1 amd 2 are both common. Race 1 is devastating, Race 2 is debilitating.

Overall Plant Symptoms

V2: mild wilting during heat, recovers overnight. Leaf canopy and vigor reduced. Bottom portion of plant distressed, leaf burn.

Leaf Symptoms

Oldest leaves: vein and leaf yellowing followed by leaf burning in an angular or "V" pattern between veins.

Stem Symptoms

Internal browing of lower branches, no discoloration of pith or leaf stems.

Root and Fruit Symptoms

Root: faint browing of the xylem tissue, can be confused with Fusarium wilt.

Disease Source

Infested soil. Very wide host range including many weeds. Commonly found in most cultivated soils.

Source Peristence

Eight to ten years of full infection potential.

Favoring Conditions

Cool soil temperatures, minor root injuries and neutral to alkaline soils.

Critical Crop Time

Symptoms more pronounced as crops stress increases. Often a component in early field decline or collapse.

Controls/Management

Resistant varieties (race1). Fumigation. Crops stress minimization.

Additional Notes

Very common and increasing severity.
